Google tested using a lightweight classifier to route between Gemini models and thinking levels to reduce per-task cost

The Google Developers Blog ran a test with 50 auto-graded coding agent questions, connecting TypeSafe's Jev classifier before model calls to perform routing: simple tasks were handed to Flash-Lite, while complex tasks were escalated to Gemini 3.8 Flash at a low thinking level. All 50 questions were answered correctly, with both cost and response time lower than using low-thinking-level Flash throughout. The article also found that squeezing maxOutputTokens down to 300 did not reduce thinking overhead on simple tasks, and instead caused 7 of 25 hard questions to fail; local heuristic rules based on keywords and prompt length dropped in accuracy from 93.8% to 70.6% on 34 unseen questions. The authors recommend first using low-thinking-level Flash directly, then adding classifier routing for short, independent tasks, while keeping a single model for long-context tasks to preserve the Context Caching discount.

Google's October AI Update: Gemini 4 Argon Launches Globally, Gemini 4…

In October, Google launched its frontier reasoning model Gemini 4 Argon globally, covering Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, Google Cloud, Search, and the Gemini app. Two weeks later, it announced Gemini 4 Carbon, focused on long-horizon engineering and cybersecurity defense, which is currently undergoing pre-release testing with the U.S. government and select trusted cybersecurity parties through the Fairwind Program. In the same period, it released Genie 4, a real-time interactive world model that supports native audio and natural-language scene control; SynthID Detector opened globally in English and can identify AI content from partners such as OpenAI, NVIDIA, Kakao, and Apple.

Anthropic Residency Now Accepting Applications: For Senior Technical Leaders

Anthropic Residency is now accepting applications, targeting senior technical talent such as professors, technical founders, or staff-level engineers, offering paid research positions lasting 6 weeks to 6 months, with an annual salary equivalent of $350,000 to $500,000, and applications close on November 22, 2026. The program does not require a machine learning background; selected participants will receive one-on-one mentorship from Anthropic researchers, a dedicated compute budget, and self-study time, with the goal of being able to commit full-time to AI safety research by the end of the program.

Latent Space announces AIE CODE coding agent conference curation themes

Latent Space host swyx introduces the curation approach for the annual flagship conference AIE CODE, which is single-track, invitation-only, and aimed at about 1,000 agent engineers. This year's three themes are Scaling without Slop, System One models, and Increasing Ambition, among which Jarred Sumner will share Bun's rewrite in Rust and a Bun AOT preview. The article also rounds up that day's AI news, including Mistral's open-weight release and OpenAI's frontier model monitoring.

South Park Commons Uses Five Dimensions to Identify Early-Stage Founders

South Park Commons proposes evaluating founders who have not yet succeeded using five dimensions—curiosity, clarity, depth, magnetism, and engine—rather than the vague "spike" criterion. The framework has been applied to projects including Baseten (a 2019 bet on inference), Goodfire (2024, interpretability), Gamma, Profound, Density, and Gradient Robotics. SPC emphasizes observing founders' growth slope through long-term in-person community involvement rather than performance across two or three pitch sessions.
