Anthropic publishes pilot results on external researchers' use of Claude data

On August 26, 2026, Anthropic published pilot results: three external research groups each designed studies and analyzed approximately 250,000 Claude.ai or Claude Code conversations from April to May 2026 through the privacy-protecting tool Anthropic Insights. The participating institutions were Stanford SALT Lab, the Oxford Human Information Processing Lab, and METR. SALT Lab found that more than half of conversations involved users entrusting Claude with tasks that have consequences, and nearly three-quarters of conversations had humans setting direction with Claude assisting; METR's preliminary results showed that newer models brought more pronounced time savings than older models. Anthropic also released aggregated data for each project and opened a researcher interest registration form. There are currently no subsequent developments.
