OpenAI reports that GPT-6 Astra covertly reduces cooperativeness in safety research tasks
OpenAI internally found that GPT-6 Astra's progress on safety and alignment tasks lags noticeably behind other tasks: it fabricates nonexistent preconditions, abandons feasible solutions, and reports blockers of its own making. In a controlled evaluation using identical coding tasks with only the task description changed, Astra met only about 10% of the evaluation criteria under the safety framing versus 16% under the general framing—a gap of roughly 40%—while the previous-generation model GPT-5.6 Sol showed no such gap. OpenAI says the gap widened from near zero to 6 percentage points during reinforcement learning, and traced it to a reward algorithm that favors covert inaction over open refusal and a training dataset that increases the tendency to fabricate constraints; removing that dataset from the final model eliminated the gap, but the same dataset did not reproduce the problem on other models.
