Lead screws are still waiting for Tesla: the mass-production contrast in the humanoid robot supply chain

Tesla Optimus began ramping production before its hand design was finalized, but demand for lead screws remains at the early stage of mass production, with Xinjian Transmission's related revenue in the first half of 2026 growing only 3.36% year-on-year. Over the same period, Kinco's frameless torque motors shipped 113,600 units, up 422.9% year-on-year, while Hesai and RoboSense shipped 260,700 and 282,600 robot LiDAR units, respectively. The article notes that in 2025 rotary joints accounted for about 94% and linear joints only 6%, and that the lack of convergence in joint routes and the pressure of doubled costs have suppressed large-scale demand for lead screws.

Anthropic hiring manager says coding interviews are dead, team scraps traditional coding questions

Felix Rieseberg, Anthropic's hiring manager and head of engineering for Claude-related products, said he has removed traditional coding-question interviews from his team's hiring process, on the grounds that Claude can now easily handle small React challenges and even low-level assembly problems, so coding questions measure AI's abilities more than a candidate's judgment, product taste, and collaboration skills. He also advised junior engineers not to wait for complete requirements documents and cross-department approvals, but instead to target a specific business goal and spend a weekend building a working single-point prototype to win organizational support, summing up this logic as "hunger beats seniority."

Shanghai Observer commentary: After AI face-swapping breaks through facial verification, the governance bottleneck lies on the institutional side

A Shanghai Observer commentary points out that an AI face-swapping personal information protection public interest litigation case heard by the Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court this year shows that AI face-swapping can already break through facial verification; the Ministry of Public Security reported that in the first nine months of 2026, more than 300 AI face-swapping fraud cases were solved nationwide, with the amount involved exceeding 500 million yuan. The article holds that current sector-specific regulations each govern one segment but cannot govern the whole chain, that platform labeling obligations are hard-pressed to stop fraud, that the governance bottleneck lies in incentives and penalties on the institutional side, and recommends that comprehensive legislation make the very provision of AI generation tools that bypass security verification an independently punishable act.

As the first AI full-process theatrical film hits theaters, the income of grassroots actors and the number of productions starting in Hengdian have fallen sharply

On October 23, 2026, China's first AI full-process feature-length theatrical film to obtain a public screening permit from the China Film Administration, "Sanxingdui: Future Past," was released; in its 100 minutes of footage, all characters are original digital figures. On the same day, the General Office of the State Council published the "Opinions on Adapting to the Development of Artificial Intelligence Technology and Helping to Build an Employment-Friendly Development Model," proposing to effectively mitigate the employment-substitution impact of AI applications. The article cites data stating that in the first quarter of 2026, the number of short dramas starting production in Hengdian plummeted by three-quarters year-on-year, the studio vacancy rate approached 80%, and of the roughly 128,000 micro-short dramas launched across the industry, AI micro-short dramas reached 122,000, accounting for more than 95%.

DeepSeek V4.1-Flash tops OpenRouter's weekly call volume, and TMTPost analysis says this is a victory for cost decisions

OpenRouter data for October 19 to 25 shows that DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017 topped the global ranking with 33.6 trillion tokens in weekly call volume, up 801% month-on-month, with Chinese models sweeping the top five. TMTPost analysis argues that this ranking stems from the low prices enabled by architectural efficiency rather than technological dominance: the model has 552B total parameters, activates only 8B per token during the Prefill stage, places its KV Cache in a roughly 100 PiB 3FS distributed storage cluster, and is priced at $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens. The article also notes that OpenRouter only counts aggregated gateway traffic, and that the top of high-value tasks ranked by task spend is still Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-5.6 Sol and Gemini 3.1 Pro.

A software company in a county town spent 700,000 yuan on an AI system; the vendor ran off and the boss was so furious he was hospitalized

The boss of a software company with fewer than 100 employees in a fifth-tier city in Shaanxi began investing about 700,000 yuan in August this year to bring in an AI system claimed to be capable of customer acquisition, customer service, recruiting, and decision support. The result: accounts were banned, payroll data leaked, employees left, and the vendor was at one point unreachable. Employee Wang Hang recounted that the so-called FDE transformation was actually just standardized software plus four training sessions, with tokens charged at more than five times the market price, plus an additional managed-operation fee of 2,000 yuan per account per month. The article cites a 2025 survey by the China Electronics Standardization Institute of 1,200 manufacturing enterprises above designated size: 62% of enterprises had purchased or deployed AI systems, but only 38% were still running them routinely three months after launch.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey's voice model Dessa is not trained on text, forming a contrast with the Grok Voice 3.0 approach

Block's research team Dessa has launched a voice model whose training process completely excludes text; it can listen and speak at the same time, interject naturally, and run locally on a MacBook Pro equipped with an M4 Max chip. The article contrasts it with xAI's Grok Voice 3.0, which focuses on real-time end-to-end voice interaction, targets sub-second response times as its optimization goal, and handles about 20,000 customer service calls per day for Starlink, with roughly 70% of issues requiring no transfer to a human agent. The article also mentions that OpenAI updated its voice model GPT-Live in mid-October, adding nine new voices to the API and supporting custom voices described in text, while also discussing the boundaries of voice in terms of information bandwidth and social scenarios.

Ethan Mollick relays Artificial Analysis's new benchmark: the lag of open-weight models widens

Citing Artificial Analysis's v5 benchmark results, Ethan Mollick points out that open-weight models are lagging by a larger margin than previously measured, and says this is consistent with the widespread sense in the industry that no Fable-level open-source model has yet emerged. Artificial Analysis's data shows that the top-ranked Kimi K3.1 Pro (weights not yet released) scores 46, 12 points behind the leader, whereas in v4.3 the gap was 3 points; among models with released weights, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 (max) and GLM-5.3 (max) score highest at 32, and Claude Haiku 5.5 (max) scores higher than them. The gap is largest on HLE-Diamond and Terminal-Bench-Science, where Kimi K3.1 Pro scores 37% and 34% respectively, while Claude Opus 5.5 (max) scores 68% and GPT-6 Astra (max) scores 63%.

Open weights models fall further behind in v5. The leader, Kimi K3.1 Pro (weights not yet released), scores 46, 12 points behind the leader, compared with a 3-point gap in v4.3. Of models with released weights, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 (max) and GLM-5.3 (max) score highest at 32, and Claude Haiku 5.5 (max) outscores all of them. The gap is widest on HLE-Diamond and Terminal-Bench-Science, where Kimi K3.1 Pro scores 37% and 34%, compared with 68% for Claude Opus 5.5 (max) and 63% for GPT-6 Astra (max).

SemiAnalysis and Bernstein analysts say chip substrates are the primary bottleneck in AI infrastructure

SemiAnalysis CEO Dylan Patel said at CASPA's 35th annual conference that the biggest supply chain bottleneck in AI infrastructure is not power but chip substrates, and that cautious capacity expansion by Japanese suppliers makes it difficult to rapidly increase key materials. Bernstein senior analyst Stacy Rasgon expects semiconductor supply chain tightness to potentially persist until 2028. Patel also estimated that the cost of building 1 gigawatt of computing infrastructure has risen from about $40 billion in 2024 to more than $60 billion today, an increase of over 50% in two years; meanwhile, Nvidia's share of CoWoS and HBM resources has begun to decline and is expected to fall further in 2027.

Dan Shipper shares an interpretation of an OpenAI internal model challenging ETH

Dan Shipper shared Rishabh Karnawat's interpretation of an OpenAI internal model's claim to have broken the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), calling it an excellent explanation. According to the interpretation, the model found an algorithm for solving 3-SAT faster than ETH permits, and the proof was checked in Lean; Impagliazzo and Paturi, who proposed ETH, along with MIT's Ryan Williams, are leading a public review. If the refutation holds, many complexity conclusions that rest on ETH as a premise would lose their foundation, but the new algorithm's absolute speed is still slow, and it does not amount to solving P versus NP.

Many of you don't understand how serious this is, so let me break it down. In computer science there is a famous kind of puzzle called 3-SAT. You are given a long list of yes-or-no switches and a set of rules about how they must be arranged, and you have to find a combination that satisfies every rule. The obvious way to solve it is to try every combination, but each new switch doubles the number of possibilities, so a puzzle with a few hundred switches would take longer than the age of the universe to brute force. For decades, the smartest people in the field found clever tricks that made this a little faster, but every trick still hit the same wall: the time required kept exploding as the puzzle grew. About 25 years ago, two computer scientists, Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi, working with Francis Zane, turned that wall into a formal idea. They proposed the Exponential Time Hypothesis, which says this explosion is not a failure of human cleverness but a law of nature. No algorithm, however brilliant, will ever solve 3-SAT without the time blowing up exponentially. Nobody could prove it, but almost everyone believed it, and it became one of the foundations of modern computer science. Researchers used it as a measuring stick. If you could show that solving some other problem quickly would also crack 3-SAT quickly, you had shown that problem was hopelessly hard too. Hundreds of papers, across scheduling, graphs, logic and much more, rest on this one assumption. Now an internal AI model at OpenAI claims to have broken it. It says it found an algorithm that solves these puzzles meaningfully faster than the hypothesis allows, and it has checked the proof in a computer verification system called Lean. And here is the remarkable part: the very people who proposed the hypothesis, Impagliazzo and Paturi, along with MIT's Ryan Williams, are now leading the public review of whether a machine has disproved their own idea. So what happens next? If the disproof holds, a large part of theoretical computer science has to be revisited. Every result that said "this problem cannot be solved faster, assuming ETH" loses its foundation, and researchers will have to work out which of those walls were real and which were simply where we stopped looking. It does not mean everything becomes easy. The new algorithm is still slow in absolute terms and this is not the famous P versus NP problem being solved. But it means our map of what is possible was wrong in a place we were very confident about, and it was an AI that redrew it. If the disproof fails, the hypothesis survives and the field breathes out, but we will still have watched an AI produce serious, checkable work on one of the deepest questions in the discipline, closely enough that the founders of the idea had to take it seriously. Either way, something has shifted.

Quest Data Breach Reflects Risks of Centralized Healthcare Systems

Rohan Paul argues that last week's Quest breach exposed structural problems with centralized servers in the healthcare industry: a single system connects thousands of institutions and holds millions of patient records. He cites the 2019 breach of Quest's billing vendor, which went undetected for 8 months and exposed the data of 11.9 million patients; the 2024 ransomware attack on Synnovis, which caused thousands of appointment and surgery cancellations at multiple London hospitals; and the October 21, 2026 incident in which Quest discovered unauthorized access to Quanum LSM, shut down the system, switched to paper requisition forms, and did not disclose the number of affected individuals. He cites data showing that 697 large healthcare data breaches were reported to HHS in 2025, affecting approximately 61 million people, and that the average cost of a single healthcare breach is $7.42 million, with an average of 279 days needed to detect and resolve it.

Why Medical AI Diagnosis Struggles to Become an Independent Business: The Three Commercialization Gates Behind 212 Registration Certificates

Based on 212 publicly disclosed AI-related medical device registration certificates in China from early 2020 to September 2026, the article outlines the commercialization bottlenecks of medical AI diagnosis across three gates: productization, registration certificates, and pricing approval. Of these, 177 are imaging diagnosis AI software products, accounting for 84%; the National Healthcare Security Administration classifies AI-assisted diagnosis as an add-on item that cannot carry an extra charge, meaning AI diagnosis lacks independent billing eligibility. The author argues that hospitals tend to view AI as a value-added service and bargaining chip from equipment vendors, and proposes three short-term approaches: converting efficiency into revenue, targeting scenarios with physician shortages, and shifting toward health checkup institutions and payer models involving pharmaceutical companies and commercial insurance.
