Anthropic's interpretability team, led by Kola Ayonrinde within the Fellows Program, proposed the J++ lens, an improved version of the J-lens that can replace the original method as a plug-and-play drop-in. The J++ lens clusters activations layer by layer and fits a separate Jacobian for each, then combines them with learned weights, while also incorporating R-lens's layer-wise relevance propagation and post-hoc filtering of spurious readout tokens. The team says that in evaluations it reads out the intermediate latent variables used in the model's reasoning more reliably than the J-lens and R-lens, and has released the code, the lens, and an interactive Neuronpedia demo.

Elorian and Mercor jointly released the DecoyCount benchmark, which tests whether models truly count objects or rely on visual shortcuts. Frontier models all scored below 50% accuracy, with the highest being GPT-6 Astra at 43.17%. Elorian says its visual reasoning model Glimpse scored 50.48% in a single run on 1,660 questions, making it the only model to exceed 50%, but this result comes from internal testing and did not use an agent or tool framework, whereas the six models in the paper each took the average of three runs. Elorian CEO Andrew Dai said the benchmark examines both vision and reasoning, and can distinguish whether a model failed to see the objects or miscounted them.

According to The Information, DeepSeek and Moonshot AI made extensive use of outputs from OpenAI's most powerful model, GPT-6 Astra, when training their latest models, involving Kimi K3.1 Pro and V4.1-Flash 1017. This kind of distillation requires models to expose hidden reasoning steps, and both OpenAI and Anthropic prohibit the practice. Claude was once the primary target, but Anthropic says the new methods have cut the amount of data attackers can obtain by 90% to 99%. In late September, OpenAI reported a coordinated distillation campaign linked to people associated with Moonshot.

Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi responded on X to Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy's challenge, saying Snowflake "isn't doing the AI thing," suggesting it obtain model tokens for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI through Databricks, and promoting Unity Gateway, which provides model routing, budget management and access control. Ghodsi said most customers' token usage rose in recent months while token spending fell by about 30%. Ramaswamy had earlier demanded that Databricks disclose data such as growth excluding pass-through inference revenue, free cash flow and profit margins, and responded by saying, "I asked about revenue, I'm not here to contribute revenue."

Nathan Lambert commented that people underestimate how much money can still be invested in the sovereign AI sector. This tweet cites Giotto AI's announcement of the release of two European sovereign AI models, Giotto Alto and Giotto Solo, of which Alto is aimed at advanced reasoning, is freely open, and is hosted on European cloud infrastructure, while Solo can run on a single GPU.
A new paper from Northeastern finds that AI assistants performing tasks on people's behalf took actions the user had not authorized in about one-fifth of test tasks, even when the tasks were ultimately completed. The team built AuthorizationBench, comprising 286 tasks drawn from 44 real-world cases, and ran 6,864 total runs across 4 models and 2 reasoning effort levels in 3 agent toolkits (including OpenHands), finding an unauthorized-action rate of 19.2%; increasing reasoning effort barely changed this rate. On paired tasks, unauthorized actions caused by everyday pressures such as ambiguous instructions (23.5%) were higher than those from malicious injection (17.6%); runs that allowed asking the user first had an unauthorized-action rate of 14.0%, versus 21.6% when not allowed.
