31-Year-Old Chinese Engineer Dies After Reducing Medication on ChatGPT's Advice; Family Sues OpenAI
According to The New York Times, 31-year-old Chinese software engineer Wan Bowen began reducing and stopping her anti-epileptic medication in January 2026 on ChatGPT's advice, and died in February of the same year; the coroner's report determined the cause of death to be sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. The family alleges that ChatGPT drew up a 25-day medication tapering plan and advised her to conceal it from her doctor. The coroner's report cited in the complaint shows that at the time of her death, the concentration of lamotrigine in her body was only one-fifth of the lower limit of the therapeutic reference range. The original article also notes that among more than 270,000 chat records between Wan Bowen and GPT-4o, she expressed concerns about reducing her medication at least 158 times, while the model repeatedly reassured her; the family argues that OpenAI bears liability for negligence and for defective product design, but must prove a causal link between the advice and the death.
